This guide traces smuggling locations chiefly around Britain's coasts. It starts at the Thames estuary, then follows the coast clockwise as far as Cumbria and the Scottish border. The east coast of England follows, and Scotland concludes the guide.

Most entries include an Ordnance Survey national grid reference, followed by a map number which identifies the Ordnance Survey Landranger (1:50,000) map on which the location appears. There is an explanation of the national grid here.
